So, what was happening during that 650 million year interval between the animal brain’s humble beginning and the arrival of the mammalian brain? The answer is: The brain was repeating and repeating processes, building new ones on top, refining and refining processes, building new ones on top, repeating and refining and repeating and refining…. (I always have to let that sit for a minute.) The brain that might look the most familiar to us showed up around 650 million years later - 200 million years ago.
